Plump or Flip? Decoding the Differences Between Lip Filler and Lip Flip

Writer's picture: fillirfillir

Lip fillers and lip flips are two popular cosmetic procedures designed to enhance the appearance of the lips, but they achieve different results through distinct techniques. Lip fillers involve injecting dermal fillers, typically hyaluronic acid, to add volume and shape to the lips, creating a fuller, plumper look. In contrast, a lip flip uses neurotoxins, such as Botox or Dysport, to relax the muscles around the upper lip, causing it to roll outward and appear more prominent without adding any volume. While both procedures can enhance the lip area, the choice between a lip filler and a lip flip depends on the desired outcome, with fillers providing more volume and a lip flip offering a more subtle, natural enhancement.

What is Lip Filler?

Lip filler involves injecting hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, such as RestylaneRevanesse or Juvederm into the lips. This treatment adds volume, enhances shape, and improves symmetry. Since fillers physically plump the lips, the results are noticeable immediately and typically last between six to twelve months, depending on the type of filler used and the individual’s metabolism.

Lip filler is ideal for those who want fuller, more voluminous lips or wish to correct asymmetry. It can also smooth out fine lines around the mouth, making it a popular choice for those looking to restore a youthful appearance.

In addition, lip filler typically can be distributed in different quantities, depending on your goals, if you’ve previously had lip filler, and the natural size of your lips. This is something that you will go over with your injector prior to your appointment. Here at fillir we offer three different syringe sizes to help you achieve your desired results:

  1. .25cc Love Tap: Quarter syringe of filler for those who need a tiny touch up

  2. .5cc Plump: Half syringe of lip filler will give you a subtle result, which is great if you want your lips to be more natural-looking, to correct minor asymmetry, or to add hydration.

  3. 1cc Full Lips: Full syringe for fuller lips. A full syringe will provide a more full and noticeable result but won't leave you with overfilled lips.

What is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip, on the other hand, does not involve adding volume. Instead, it uses a small amount of Botox or Dysport to inject into the muscle around the mouth. This relaxes the upper lip, causing it to roll slightly outward. As a result, the upper lip appears more pronounced without actually increasing its size.

The lip flip is best suited for those who want a subtle enhancement rather than additional fullness. It also helps reduce the appearance of a gummy smile by preventing the upper lip from lifting too high when smiling. Results take about three to seven days to fully kick in and typically last around two to three months.

Key Differences Between Lip Filler and a Lip Flip

The main difference between these treatments is that lip filler adds volume and plumps the lips, while a lip flip alters the position and shape of the lips without adding fullness. Lip filler is better for those looking for fullness and definition, whereas a lip flip is a great option for those who want a more subtle, natural-looking enhancement without committing to filler.

The processes look a bit different as well. For lip filler your provider will put topical numbing on your lips prior to injecting. The injection process of either using a cannula or needle technique may take anywhere from 15-30 minutes. For a lip flip you will be numbed, for this process is very quick.

Additionally, lip fillers last much longer than a lip flip, usually between six months to a year, whereas a lip flip only lasts two to three months before needing a touch-up. Lip fillers also smooth fine lines around the mouth, while a lip flip primarily affects the position of the upper lip without addressing texture or wrinkles.

Can You Combine a Lip Flip and Lip Filler?

Yes! Many people choose to combine both treatments for a balanced, natural-looking enhancement. The filler adds volume, while the lip flip helps define the shape and cupid’s bow of the upper lip. This combination can create a fuller yet soft and natural pout without making the lips look overdone.

If you're considering both, it's important to consult with a skilled injector here at fillir who can tailor the treatments to your specific goals to ensure the best results.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

If your goal is fuller, plumper lips, lip filler is the best choice. If you want a subtle enhancement, a slightly more pronounced upper lip, or to reduce a gummy smile, then a lip flip might be the better option. The best way to determine the right treatment for you is to schedule a free consultation with an experienced injector here at fillir who can assess your facial structure and help you achieve your desired look.
